FMD Outbreak in Surkhet, Nepal

Foot and Mouth Disease is highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven hoofed animals. It is caused by Aptho virus which belongs to Picornaviridae family. There are seven viral serotypes: O, A, C, Asia-I, SAT-I, SAT-II and SAT-III. Out of these seven serotypes, O, A and Asia-I is reported in Nepal. Serotype C was only observed during the period from 1990 -1996. Serotype O is the major serotype prevalent in Nepal which is about 82% of total followed by serotype Asia-I (about 15%) and serotype A (about 3%).

During June-July, 2015, the clinical cases of FMD was observed in the Birendranagar, Surkhet. Mostly the clinical cases of FMD was observed in cattle with few cases of buffalo, swine and goat. In cattle, most of them were ox which was employed for ploughing paddy field. The trend showed that spread of disease among the livestock population of Birendranagar is due to animal movement, especially during free grazing and ploughing paddy field.

Here are the photographs which was taken during the field visit.
